Observation: the use of demonstration(s) as a means of conveying information about how to perform a skill (magill, 2011) imitation, emulation, action observation. Discharge when an action is executed but also when same action is passively observed fmri experiments: Compare cortical areas activated during action observation and action execution and evidence of overlap between areas. Passive observation results in activation of muscles involved in producing observed hand, arm, and finger movements. Why do we observe: skill function: to learn information related to skill execution, performance function: to achieve optimal mental/physiological functioning, strategy function: to develop and execute plays. Skilled/expert model: see flawless performance (get a blueprint of how movement should be executed) Unskilled/novice or learning model: see imperfect execution or progression of a model improving over time (understand error detection/correction) Expert model shows how the movement should be done. Learning model shows error detection and correction. Working with both might produce a better memory representation.
