APA 2140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Vestibular Nerve, Vestibular System, Hair Cell
Document Summary
Lecture 2: proprioception: your vision doesn"t perceive things accurately. Introception: how one perceives pain and hunger and the movement of internal organs joints. Balance: there are two systems: one that detects linear acceleration and the other that detects rotational acceleration. It is detected by your nervous system firing away and sending signals. Linear acceleration: the macula tips based on if you lean your head forward or backwards. It takes a while for fluid to slowly catch up, the fluid is pushing in the opposite direction against the hair and there is a change in firing. Vestibular code- is what tells your body which way is up and refers to your sense of balance. It does this by (cid:498)ticking away(cid:499) giving neural signals: when you rotate your head one way it speeds up on one side and slows down on the other.
