ARB 2101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Persian Language, Art Music, Quran
Document Summary
In early islam the word of god should be presented in the most respectful form: respect = beauty. Starting with the umayyad era calligraphy slowly became an art by itself. Most of islam schools prohibit the representation of living creatures, except for plants. Calligraphy became the main visual art in most of the arab world. Arab calligraphy was inspired in its early days by the egyptian hieroglyph. First versions of the koran : hijazi and kufi , styles. Other, simpler, styles were soon developed in egypt: thuluthi and naskhi . Many other styles were developed in different places by different individual artists. The persians and, later, the turks developed their own styles: farsi and diwani . Main characteristic of arab calligraphy: combining art with mathematics. Hieroglyph is closer to drawing than to writing and cannot be called calligraphy. Byzantine mosaic murals : repetitive, interlaced geometrical forms.
