Sigmund freud and jacques lacan; laura mulvey, hal foster, mieke bal, Psychoanalytic art history will suggest that there is latent content always, or that there is always some underlying unconscious, often sexual. Freud navigated between the conscious and unconscious and focused on biography and how that may help us understand the mind of the artist and therefore understand the work of art better. Lacan will focus on the viewer and how looking at art is sexually invested and that art is a series of gazes. A turn of the century viennese doctor who invented psychoanalysis as a medical therapy for the treatment of certain mental disturbances. His writings and publications were widespread in other disciplines. He said psychoanalysis was based on two key principals: The mental and conscious life are not the same. The conscious focuses on thinking and reasoning whilst the unconscious focuses on desire, impulse and traumatic memory. Sexual desires are integral to the human psyche.
