The contemporary art has been used mostly over the past 20 years, though can mean from the mid 1990"s onwards and is considered the art of the now. Contemporary art is a global phenomenon unlike some art movements that were rooted in a specific place. Artists that are still practicing currently though started in the 1960s-1970s may be considered contemporary artists causing their early art to be called contemporary despite it"s age. Richard serra was considered a contemporary/ minimalist artist. Often designed the art though didn"t actually make it due to the size and materials used. The huge scale allows people to walk in between the works. It also prevents many galleries from holding them. A lot of contemporary art uses shock value. This began in the mid 1990s with artists who deliberately produced an artistic equivalent that were based on moral issues that pushed the envelope.
