ART 1361 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Henry Fuseli, Academic Art, Horatii
Document Summary
During this period of time there was increased wealth and power for the aristocrats, of which owned 90% of france"s wealth. They did not, by any means, make up the majority of france. Combined the word baroco (italian) and rocaille (french), a popular form of ornamentation using shells and pebbles. There is a lot of detail, often incorporating gold and other metallics with soft pastels and naturalistic forms. Art was sold and discussed in shops, the nobility had lots of leisure time. The swing by fragonard is a good example of rococo paintings. The royal academy of painting and sculpture was established in france in 1648. The primary aim was to train artists and to give them a venue in which they may exhibit their works. The curriculum began with drawing prints of greco/roman statues, moving onto drawing sculptures themselves, then drawing renaissance artists, and finally drawing nude models.
