Document Summary
Why do cells die: the size of an organ or organism depends on the total cell mass; the cell number must be controlled. You need to be able to manage how many cells there are; multicellular organisms. Each cells grow, divide, and contribute to number of cells; as cell grows so do organs and tissues, and their needs. To control this, cell has a mechanism to decide when and how a cell will die. What are the triggers of cell death: chemical messengers (molecules that will travel from one cell to another) Mitogens (cell division; when you no longer have those) Survival factors (when you no longer have survival factors, the cell cell no longer receives the message to remain healthy and it dies: stress (toxicity, damage, dyshomeostasis, etc. ) Direct: cell cycle checkpoints (there for the cell to evaluate if its healthy, if damaged then it dies; moments in a cells cycle); can repair.
