Explain the role of mitochondria in a cell with regards to energy producion. Understand the importance of calcium (availability, storage, cellular funcions) Understand key concepts of cellular energeics in relaion to mitochondria (and chloroplasts) Response to stress: the mitochondria can respond to stress so that the cell can survive (temperature changes, ph changes). Cell death: someimes cells cells need to die someimes to beneit the organism. Calcium storage: mitochondria can store a lot of calcium. Mitochondria has 2 membranes, with diferent proteins embedded, there is diferent intermembrane space, diferent places have diferent funcions. Can study by isolaing them from the rest of the cell and doing diferent centrifugaions to get diferent areas, there are diferent techniques to look and study mitochondria. The objecive of cellular respiraion: power it up! Everything that goes on within cellular respiraion (powerhouse-cellular respiraion), their goal is to power up a protein. Protein is a motor, it needs to be fueled.
