Document Summary

2 ways in which cells die differentiate and compare them. They can grow in size and number but at some point there needs to be an end, and get rid of unhealthy, not efficient damaged or old cells, beneficial to selectively remove some cells. 2 main types of cell death: apoptosis necrosis. Much of the initial work on apoptosis was conducted using a nematode. Identical number of cells for each nematode and you can track them. Process of dying is a very conserved process, use simpler model. Everytime the nematode divides into an adult nematode the same 131 cells die so its easy to track them. They identified the genes responsible for the timing for cell death mechanism and for humans. Process is simpler in nematode but it"s the same. During necrosis there is a point where you can still reverse the process. Under apoptosis as soon as its started you cannot reverse the cell is committed to die.
