Document Summary

Lecture 14 - demographic factors and population persistence. Over decades, immigration, age-structure, emigration, rate of growth (r0) Age-structure = proportion of some age group (juvenile, non-reproductive, 1 years) Can change genetic properties over ecological time scales too. The r0 and what determines it, usually in species without distinct breeding seasons. Lambda for those with a distinct breeding season but same as r0. Cannot think of populations as closed, growth rate effected by immigration and emigration. Study factors together to understand how a population will respond to short term changes in environment. Try to figure out what is the mvp for it to survive some threshold (controversial to decide threshold) In a perfect world, would just get one number as the answer. But lots of stochasticity and environmental changes, assume demographic factor changes. Generate range of answer dependent on the changes. Always a small chance to go extinct at t = 0 and t = a lot later.
