Once a lack of nutrient or bad living condition triggers the cell to turn into endospore, a lot of the metabolic functions are shut down, they will protect the dna. They dry out the dna to resist heat, cold, harsh chemicals and radiation. They are only found in some gram positive bacteria, common studied are bacillus, clostridium. Getting rid of clostridium in hospital setting is difficult because they can form endospores.
