The human animal lecture 3 part 2 the human skin. We have it isolated in different parts of the body. We retain the hair but they have become so fine that they do not contribute to a fur coating. If this is ancestral and one of the features that caused the emergence of mammals and part of their homeostasis. Thermoregulation: hair is a good insulator keeps us warm. Protection: abrasion, sunlight: uv rays hair is a barrier, parasites: harbor parasites so no hair means no place for them to hide out. Species recognition: variations of spots and stripes. Muscles that allow hair to rise and fall that contribute to visual messages. When we see other mammals that don"t have the full covering of body hair that it has reasonable and justifiable evolutionary reasons. Elephant and hippo live in very dry and hot environments. Disadvantage to have a big layer of warm capturing insulation.
