Procuticle gives the cuticle it"s strength as this is where the alpha-chitin rods are reinforcing it. Crustacea also have mesocuticle (no other ones do) Calcium salts in mesocuticle mineralizes the cuticle hence hardening it. Exocuticle and end cuticle both contain chitin however the exocuticle has undergone. Hardening" where there is a special cross linking of the proteins to each other (covalently bonded) making it extremely durable and also turns it brown. Endo cuticle has not been hardened hence it is strictly ionic interactions between the protein and chitin. Wax layer appears in terrestrial animals to retain moisture. Cement layer undergoes hardening and protects the soft wax layer underneath. Tendon goes all the way down to the base of the leg (this is the jumping leg) Can not sense the environment through the cuticle. Setal hair embedded in socket, socket embedded in cuticle. Nerve cell at the base of the setal hair.
