Document Summary

The relationship between persistence and habitat loss is usually a saturating relationship, so that as habitat declines, further habitat loss has increasingly large effects on extinction rates. It is possible to lose habitats with relatively small amounts of species extinction: landscapes that have been severely destroyed can be managed and still get better, however, the more we lose habitats the more extinctions become important. Species at high trophic levels: tend to be large and rare with slow rates of population growth (low density population) Local endemics: restricted ranges are often threatened by habitat loss and degradation. Feb. 1 2018: habitat losses will play a larger role in the future. Migratory species: survival depends on suitable habitat on both breeding and wintering grounds. Ever habitat they pass can increase the risks of vulnerability. Species with little evolutionary experience with disturbances: na ve, no experience with predators of competition (island habitats) Species with chronically small populations (many tropic tree species)
