BPS 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Microorganism, Macrophage, Capsid
Document Summary
Sicker and sicker and then get better, recover(few days) Most illness; get immunity and basically never get it again once you"ve gotten it once. Aquire immunity, small spike 20-35 when you have kids. Virus damages mucous membranes, destroys tissue, leaving behind scar. Doesn"t work as efficiently anymore, slowly build up damages. Average human body 20x more bacterial cells than human cells. Human body is under constant attack- covered in bacteria, viruses, other microscopic life. Works all the time, constantly battling off infections, viruses bacteria; all day long, everywhere we go. Immobolize invaders / selectively destroy: macrophages (wbc"s) Specialized cells to eat foreign cells/ kill infected cells. Cold symptoms causes by innate immune system (coughing, runny nose, watery eyes) How it works (responds to tissue damage- release of cytokines- inflammation, redness, swelling, recruits macrophages and other wbc"s to destroy invading microbes) Provides swelling, spreads out gaps between bacteria, gives immune system cells easier access, more blood supply to area.
