Much like there is a genetic component to personality, there is a genetic component to mental illness. Once thought to be caused by demons: trepanation was a common treatment (cut a hole in the head, might do some alterations on the brain) Mentally ill were often tortured: believed that they need to smarten up and control their behaviour. If they did not, they were tortured (not successful nor pleasant) Asylums and prisons: put them into these places so that they were out of sight, foundations for a lot of treatments throughout history, asylums eventually became mental hospitals where these individuals would get treated.
