Plague doctors: treated people with the plague, covered themselves in a robe and mask, would have a characteristic beak. Miasma bad smell causes the disease. Flowers/strong smelling spices at the end of the beak. Cause of disease: believed it was punishment from god, use scapegoats and killed them to try and please god, caused by bacteria, in fleas, and fleas were living on rats. Before penicillin, high chance of death from infection. Pioneered idea of epidemiology statistics looking at patterns in disease to find cause. Prepared map of all cases of cholera, all located around a water pump. Water pump built over old sewage dump, believed it was caused by something in the water. Proved that microbes cause disease through fungi. Atharva-veda describes the idea disease is caused by invisible animals,1400 years ago. Pasteurization heating milk to kill bacteria and make safe milk, used on other food products. Reduce risk of disease by killing bacteria in food.
