More than 200 different viruses cause colds: rhinovirus most common, influenza. Symptoms aren"t produced by virus, produced by immune system. Virus will destroy tissue, creating spaces called plaques where the virus killed cells. Runny nose, coughing is an immune response. Medication will treat the symptoms, not cure. Some remedies will do nothing: placebo, feel better by doing something. Researched viral infections, focused on the cold. Analyzed sneezes: found peoples sneezes did not contain a lot of virus. Transfer of the virus comes from touching nose touching object another person touches that. Colds become more common in crowds, breeding ground for virus. Cold season: indoors more, in school, pattern is being close together. Remote island: months where people get colds september may, june through august nobody gets a cold. Has winter during these months: incidence of cold has to do with ships visiting, bringing people together.
