Last bps3102 class: approaches and methods in pharmacology. Epidemiology: the study of patterns, causes and effects of health and other environment factors. Observational study: no manipulation on part of researcher; usually correlative. Choose a testable hypothesis; (easiest to test when it relates to a single variable) Different countries have different standards for market approval. 3 phases of clinical trials fairly standard. Phase 4 is about performance and safety after drug on market. Levels of clinical evidence systematic review synthesizes all the data available, but doesn"t combine for reanalysis. Meta-analysis collectes the data, pools it, and reanalyzes it. Rct: important for drug studies to produce systematic reviews. Animal and in vitro work (model systems) cohort case control: based on subjective experience case report: observation of a medical case/effect in vitro: More systemic effects and interactions present; can use inhibitors etc to change different factors, but will not know precisely all effects. Physiological data ex: knockout mouse to determine interactions.
