South east asia to africa, and everything in between. Trade was not his primary reason for exploration- he wanted to know about the world and establish relations with foreign countries. He wanted a tributary system- other countries sending gifts as a partnership. These countries were all part of similar written systems except japan. Matteo ricci- one of the first missionaries to come to china. He wanted to adapt himself to chinese culture. He learned chinese and tried to learn their ways. Created maps of the world including china that would attract the chinese emperor. Hard for people to be attracted to christianity because all of their religions believed in many gods.
