Occurred when ionian greeks in asia minor came to revolt; so persians called out on their mainland for help. Only 2 cities responded: eretria (island of euboia) & athens (who sent war ships) Greeks marched inland & burned provincial capital of sardis. But then greek was defeated in island of lade; miletus was dismissed & revol collapsed. Then persians punished athens & eretria: marathon. Large persian fleet sent by king darius sailed across aegean. Then sailed across to attica reaching plain of marathon east of athens. Athenians supported by only 600 allies from boiotian town of plataia - defeated larger persian army. Battle is regarded as turning point in western history. As a result of athens triumph at marathon - claim a status among other cities. Many monuments like buildings, paintings & sculpture - erected in athens at marathon & delphi. This is to remind both athenians & greeks of athenian victory.
