Lecture 9: colonization, eastern influences, the doric order; the literature. Cities of mainland greece began to send out groups of settlers to found new cities. Reasons for this not fully understood but suggested several theories: trade (especially for metals, overpopulation. Love of adventure: political unrest, drought or subsequent famine (primacy cause of end of mycenaean world) Abandonment of several wells in athens indicates problems w/ water supply in central greece. Increased activity at the sanctuaries of several deities associated w/ rain or water. Also variety of written sources refer to famine as a factor in decision to found colony. Early colonizing rates found in band running through central greece: Achaia, corinth, megara, islands of euboia, andros, naxos & paros. At first: greeks colonized southern italy & island of sicily - then moved to north africa & along coast of france reaching spain; other colonies were also found in thrace.
