Lecture 4: From Delian League to Athenian Empire
• Why did the Delian League morph into the Athenian Empire?
o The Spartans allowed it to happen, they had chances to diminish Athenian power
but consistently did not do so
o When they finally do, Athenian power is so strong it takes 27 years to take down
The Fall of Pausanias
• After defeating the Persians, Pausanias immediately starts to have issues
o Still viewed
• Capture of Byzantion (478)
o Pausanias allows himself to be bribed by Xerxes and is offered the king’s
daughter in marriage
▪ He is given the chance to become the Persian King’s father, because any
son he has will become King
o Pausanias goes rogue and is rejected by the other Greeks and is forcefully
removed from ….
▪ This upsets the Damos because, although Pausanias is corrupt and a
traitor, he is still a Spartan and can’t be kicked out by other Greeks
▪ This creates a call for war from the Damos against the Athenians
▪ The Gerousia goes against the Damos and overrules their wants to go to
war and is one of the first times the people and the ruling authority
aren’t on the same page or getting along
o
Crisis at Sparta
• Sparta suffered a massive 7.2 earthquake in 465 where over 35% of the Spartan
population was killed
• The Agoge was hit hard and the children suffered proportionately
• The population of Sparta continues to decline as time passes as more and more people
weren’t able to pay the taxes and become inferior status
o This continues to lead to the downfall of the Spartans as more and more people
become inferior status and have no way of making money and getting out of that
bottom status
• Fifth Messenian War (465-455)
