Lecture 1: introduction to ancient greece & civilization. They colonized almost all mediterranean & black seas. Their political structure based on the polis - small independent city-state controlling a limited amount of land. Greek origins - where they came from or how to define them: From western culture their identity include: athletics, philosophy, architecture, education, sculpture. In the beginning they were recognized as differently. 2 aspects set them apart from other: language & religion. Ancient greeks defined themselves linguistically - unfamiliar sounds made by foreigner (bar-bar) Indo-european for example & thus greeks related to other european languages. Greeks have been moving around mediterranean along w/new immigrants. Many distinct dialects reflect tribal divisions which served as political divisions in historic period. Common belief in many deities & several practice of traditional rituals. Belief in olympian gods by greeks; greek pantheon concerning creation myths - zeus, athena, poseidon. Greek - name used by the romans to designate peninsula & its inhabitants (graecia)
