CLA 2101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Megaron, Tiryns, Heinrich Schliemann
Document Summary
The rise of the mycenaean palaces tiryns and pylos. It was a port city on the water so it had a good reason to protect itself against sea war. The early excavators were schliemann and dorpfeld who was an architect. It started as a german dig and it still is. Tiryns was called strong-walled by homer because it was surrounded by a large wall. They had a walkway on top so that people can shoot at enemies from above. The outside had stones and inside was rubble which made it almost impossible to break down. It was called cyclopean architecture because according to legend, perseus had cyclops to build them. There"s an upper citadel (palace) and a lower citadel (houses) which were connected together by stairs. The rundbau was located on the highest point of the hill. It might not have only been storage for grain.
