Document Summary
Ship (can be good, or like the titanic) Why were workplaces designed this way in the first place: efficiency, routine, standardized, different acceptance of authority, different acceptance of centralized power/communication. How does routinizing every aspect of human life erode the human spirit : we all like to feel valued. We look to solve problems and have acknowledgement of contributions. When we don"t have that, it declines our spirit. Myopic: just seeing what is in front of us, rather than seeing the value in history. Tall structure: narrow span of control, number of hierarchical levels. Flat structure: more delegation, wide rather than tall, looser control. Centralized authority (clear lines of who is responsible for what) Communication tends to be vertical and goes through several levels before it gets to the front line workers. Horizontal: more likely to be known by those you are communicating with. Max weber: critical of bureaucracy"s dehumanizing potential, erosion of human spirit.
