Lecture 6: struggle for gender equality in the newsrooms. Progressive environment where there is freedom of speech for news, use of human rights to discuss issues like domestic violence, different sexualities, etc. Self-censorship occurs more than official censorship as there are societal pressures of acting in a certain way. Confessional sectarian political system (politics and religion are intertwined: there are different religious groups and conflict often occurs between these views. Conservative patriarchal social values due to reliance on religious thought. Increasing dialogue on gender equality and issues dealing with the oppression of women. Underrepresentation of women in: positions of power, the news industry, **women working in the media industry are often seen as program announcers, weather reporters, or reading the news but not in higher positions of power. Exceeds 2:1 male to female in lebanese news industry. Contrasts that there are roughly 4:1 female to male in journalism programs.
