There are different ways of classifying conflict. It is importance to understand the difference and the level to which they are occurring. Material level (parties are competing for physical resources) Relational level (people miscommunicate, misunderstand, power distributed unequally or people engage in competitive social behaviours and strategies) Spiritual, perceptual & symbolic levels (incompatibility between cultures, gender, or between people with diverse personalities and world views) Misperception, stereotyping and often involve strong emotions. Legitimize feelings and provide a process to do so. Clear up misconceptions and build positive perceptions. Occurs over information or misinformation, over what information is relevant, or how it should be collected or interpreted: intervention. Seek agreement from parties on: what data is important, how to collect and interpret, how to use outside experts to break deadlocks. When parties believe they are in competition over substantive, procedural or psychological interests: intervention: Seek to clarify what the parties want, need, or fear.
