Sending and receiving occurs simultaneously (communication is cyclical) Communication has a relational component as well as context dimension. Involves verbal and nonverbal elements a message is sent, as interpretations may vary depending on the relationship. Communication depends on shared fields of experience. Communication has a power component: ex. tone of voice, handshakes, in the machine model, power is more official and delegated/bestowed by higher levels, organism power is unofficial and complex. Communication is always battling noise or communication breakdown: ex. personality, jargon, speed, linguistic ability, redundant information, expectancy, fear of pain as we tend to avoid discomfort. Identification/importance of upward communication in addition to downward. Role of communication was identified for the first time. Researchers because more interested in the informal group which formed, with all the social mores, creeds, etc. that create a sense of belonging.
