CMN 2148: Organizational Communication   Sept 5  2012  Intro:  What is an Organization? ­  organizations are about the process of organizing , not just the product itself. An idea, concept not just an  item.  ­Competitors and stakeholders help to identify an organization (ex: Samsung and apple, Samsung must  have some good products out there because of apple’s controversy with them)  what goes on outside an organization, makes an organization  Symbolic Construction ­Created through the communication of people (inside and outside the org.) ­Not the buildings themselves, the papers, the products.  ­Orgns exist by virtue of people enacting them through their communication. Stakeholders, media, competition.  ­Created through Communication and therefore: organizations are fluid and in process. what an organization is and can be is influenced by perceptions, biases, beliefs, fears, etc. communication is central to the process. What is communication? Human communication is:  The process of making sense out of the world and sharing that sense with others. Sense making is the “ongoing retrospective development of plausible images that rationalize what people  are doing.” (Weick, et al., 2005, p409)  Organizational c
