The multifaceted nature of our identities is experienced and negotiated by us in our everyday life. being in order to identify with a certain group or activity. Social categorization & subgroups: social categorization refers to the grouping of people based on skin-colour, dress, language, occupation, interest, region, or desirable/undesirable qualities, etc, these groups existing within the larger cultural environment are referred to as subgroups. Identities formed as a result of group membership can be anchored at both the individual and collective levels, giving a person personal and social identities. An ingroup is a group whose norms, aspirations, and values shape the behaviour of its members. Ingroup (cid:523)(cid:494)us(cid:495)(cid:524) represents a special class of membership group characterized by internal cohesiveness: outgroup (cid:523)(cid:494)them(cid:495)(cid:524) is a group whose attributes are dissimilar from those of the ingroup. An outgroup may oppose the accomplishment of the ingroup(cid:495)s goals. Stages of identity development: attempts to challenge it.
