Culture, values, cultural & value orientations: culture as we have seen provide us a way of organizing our overall thoughts and patterns of behaviour and beliefs. Values form an important core facet of culture: often seen as guiding principles which have an impact on behaviour/s: this chapter focuses on cultural and value orientations and their influence on behaviours. Dimensions of culture: the categorisation of cultural dimensions is primarily based on the works of geert hofstede(1980), the five dimensions of culture are presented along cultural continua, which present the dimensions as continuous and varying in degrees. Individualism versus collectivism: uncertainty avoidance, power distance, long term /short term orientation (ofstede"s five cultural dimensions: In contrast, collectivistic cultures emphasize values that serve and preserve the in-group by subordinating personal goals to this end. Group membership is more important than individuality; responsibility is shared and accountability is collective. Some cultures have a high need for information and certainty, and members are actively security seeking.
