The boundary principle:  o Intercultural cmn is a process whereby people from different cultures define their  collective identities by drawing boundary lines between themselves, looking for  mutually acceptable boundary fit.  Uncertainty principle:  o Constructing knowledge in intercultural cmn; uncertainty principle o Let the mystery be o Objective; help understand and appreciate the inherent …. (look up)  o To establish the boundary fit, people must learn to interact with one another  venturing beyond the boundary lines o People from each culture must know o Who they are (self image) o What they think people from the other culture think of them 9reflective  self­image)  o People from different culture try to gain knowledge about each others identity and  represent it as a completely and precisely as possible o But what is the nature of knowledge?  o ….scientific method o People are considered to rely on variables and behave in patterns  (determinism)  o Goal of the objective inquiry is to find all such variables and formulate  laws of cause and effect in order to predict people interactions Objective approach to knowledge:  o knowledge exist objectively and is external to people o know something is to capture and represent its meanings  Subjective approach to knowledge:  o knowledge does not simply exist in things; it is constructed in the dynamic  relationships between objects and people as subjects of inquiry  o also called humanists or interpretive approach o constructed by people in various situations of interactions. Cultural meaning are  internal to people o voluntarism  o to know something is to capture and represent its meanng as it related to  other things including the observer.    ***Objective vs. Subjective View of knowledge, basis of behavior, goal of inquiry, result of inquiry (Green table in  powerpoint)  Intercultural cmn is inherently variable and subject to reinterpretation; that is why we  cmn and clarify, to reduce the uncertainty the best we can. A degree of uncertainty.  We  must deal with it, share information with others and understand their information  ourselves. Intercultural cmn is a process of disclosure.  ***** on exam** Uncertainty principle 5 (or so) steps… etc (look up)  performativity principle:  o Intercu
