How people manage their sex and aggression: past as prologue makes sense of the present by looking at the past, looking at past experiences. Id: part of the psyche that seeks to reduce tension (from drives); pleasure principle pushing for happiness. Ego: mediates between needs and reality; reality principle mediates the conflicts, promote adaptation. Superego: link with parental and societal values and standards; inhibitory function what we take from cultures and society around us. Defense mechanisms to deal with conflicts: repression forgetting about a problem. Identification when you identify with someone, assessing what they bring to your social group, wanting to be more like someone else, because there is something that you are missing, taking a quality from someone.
