Shame: can be viewed as both an emotion and a process. It involves a rejection of shame by the offender. Social bonds: attachment to parents, criminal embeddedness (criminal behaviour, other factors, such as low self-control and embeddedness in a criminal lifestyle, may influence offenders" expectations for reintegration, their prior involvement in crime and criminal subcultures. It also involves spending time with others who behave and think in a similar manner. Social stigma: deviant identity, difficult time trying to portray a positive image to others, which can result in lower self esteem. Gotham used stigma and said that stigma is used to devalue certain social groups. Originally, it was people who was disfigured or unusual looking in his original definition.
