Class 2: The Demonic Perspective
Trephining: individuals experiencing any type of spirits etc. would be ‘cured’ by
receiving two holes drilled in their skull which was believed to release these spirits
What To Do with the Witches?
Exodus 22:18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
Leviticus 20:27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a
wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their
blood shall be upon them.
Assumptions of Demonology
The world is a battlefield between supernatural forces of good and bad
Deviance = sin
Cause and cure of deviant behaviour in the realm of the supernatural
Deviance has??
1. Harmful to victims
2. God
3. The entire cosmos
The world is a battlefield between supernatural forces of good and bad
Two Paths to Demonic Deviance:
The Temptation Model: ex. Adam and Eve. The individual always has a choice. The
temptation implies sin, and that the individual made a choice, they are responsible.
Therefore they deserve punishment.
The Path of Possession: individual becomes possessed by an evil spirit. Implying that
the individual did not have the ability to imply choice. Beyond our control, therefore
this person is deserving of spiritual assistance and would be cured by an exorcism
How to Diagnose the Handiwork of the Devil
Trial By Ordeal (trial by torture): individual is accused of a crime, must walk across
burning coal or pick up a burning iron and depending on the offense they walk
longer or have a heavier weight. They are then bound for 3 days. If the wounds
started to heal after 3 days therefore God has intervened and this person must be
innocent. If the wounds are infected and still unhealed, they are guilty.
Trial by Cold Water: legs and hand tied together and dropped into cold water. If they
sank they were innocent, if they floated they were guilty water is so pure therefore
if you float you are being repelled
