Policing in Canada
The Charter and Policing (Section 7-12) online:
- Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the purpose and the
right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of
fundamental justice
- Everyone has the right to be secure against unreasonable search or seizure
- Everyone has the right not to arbitrary detained or imprisoned
- Everyone has the right on arrest or detention
o To be informed promptly of the reasons therefore:
To retain and instruct counsel without delay and to be
informed of that right
To have the validity of the detention determined by the way of
habeas corpus and to be released if the detention is not lawful
- Any person charged with an offense has the right:
o To be informed without reasonable delay of the specific offense
o To be tried within a reasonable time
o Not to be compelled to be a witness in proceedings against the person
in respect of the offense
Police Facts:
- There are 67,085 police officers in Canada. This does not include the other
peace officers
- The RCMP make up 25% (18,018) of all Canadian police officers
- Per capita, there are 199 officers 100,000 citizens (Much lower than the US
247 per 100,000 in 1998)
- Saskatchewan (207) has the most police officers per capita of the 10
provinces (Manitoba -204; Nova Scotia 200; Quebec 198)
- Among CMA’a, Thunder Bay, Saint John and Regina has the highest
Police and Women
- In 2009 there were 12,805 female police officers
- An increase of over 5% from 2008
- Accounting for 19.1% of all officers
- There has been a steady increase of female officers since the early 1970’s

- Canadian Government spent 11.4 billion on policing in 2009
- $344 per Canadian
- Ontario $294
