Total costs of operating criminal justice system in 2000/2001. Adult correctional system $ 3 billion (followed by the courts, legal aid and prosecutions) ,000 -,000 per year to incarcerate a female offender (because fewer women incarcerated than men, but the services are still needed, it costs significantly more) Substantive justice truthfulness of allegations (how accurate the outcome /verdict, and has the appropriate punishment been given) Probation is the most commonly used sanction in society. Dark figure of crime is the crime that is being committed, that hasn"t been noticed. Disparity: inconsistency as a result of the authorities using illegitimate factors in making decisions. Illegitimate factors can be: treating males or females differently, ethnic origin, religion, age, an individuals sexual preference, or an individuals socio- economic background. Discrimination: differential treatment based on negative judgments relating to group membership: Systemic: exists in all aspects of criminal justice system (natives are most likely to be arrested, and put in high security prisons)
