Document Summary

First model of prison: pennsylvania model (19th century). In the cells you had a bed, a toilet and some sort of machinery to work on. What was unique about this type of prison was that they never left their cell. There were high rates of insanity and suicide. It was also very expensive since every inmate got a piece of machinery. Auburn model (19 th century): this was the second model of prisons. Prisoners were allowed to spend time out of their cell. In fact the only time in their cell was to sleep. Inmates were in the presence of one another but everything was done in silence. Direct and indirect forms of communication were not allowed. They were beaten and whipped if you communicated. They prevented communication, stopped identification and it was a form of shame. The lock step shuffle: prisoners were all dressed the same. When they walked together they would walk in total unison.
