Rewards take on a special significance because inmates view these as to lessen the pains of prison. (recording) Inmates may build their entire day around the rewards that they"ve garner: punishments. Example: taken away your right to have visitors. This is what happens when you break the rewards. Mechanisms for authorities to manipulate the inmates to create favourites or penalize those they don"t like. One set of punishment could be withdrawing privileges or removing the inmate from receiving rewards or sent to the hole, do some undesirable task, publically humiliated. Punishments hold a special significant because rewards are so powerful.
