Lecture 9
We go from just worrying about whether or not the individual committed a crime to gathering
knowledge about an offender, evaluating their risk.
Goffman studied what it is about total institutions that make them different from other
institutions in society. The practices in these total institutions makes offenders disassociate
from who they were upon arrival, regardless of whether the institution is voluntary or not.
We’re in preformative modes to show people our masculinity.
Emotional Architecture of Prison:
-Outside masculinity
-Prisoner identity
-Institutionalization of hyper-masculinity: being overly masculine, exaggerating them because
