CRM 2306 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Situational Sexual Behavior, Total Institution, Hypermasculinity
Document Summary
We go from just worrying about whether or not the individual committed a crime to gathering knowledge about an offender, evaluating their risk. Goffman studied what it is about total institutions that make them different from other institutions in society. The practices in these total institutions makes offenders disassociate from who they were upon arrival, regardless of whether the institution is voluntary or not. We"re in preformative modes to show people our masculinity. Institutionalization of hyper-masculinity: being overly masculine, exaggerating them because the typical ways you would show your masculinity are not all available in a total institution so you exaggerate what you do have. Penal sexuality: in prison there is a fusion of sexual and social roles. Peoples sexual habits in prison will determine their social status. In prison, sex between men in total institutions is not homosexual because sex between males on the inside is a way to reaffirm their masculinity.
