Imprisonment as punishment: the prison in contemporary society. Punish the mind instead of the body because the body is less resilient. Potential downfall of public punishment turning on the authority; rebelling against those in power. Tuesday, september 13, 2016: emphasis on the law, reparation/ retribution deterrence = general speci c, proportionality punishment = crime, beccaria the way we have been punishing people has been too arbitrary. If we want people to stop committing crimes and we want to punish those who do committee in a fair way we have to have law. System where results of behaviours would be outlines speci cally. Take away discretion form judges but also educate society on good/criminal behaviour. Move away from the idea that punishment is a way to repair relationship with god. Problems of early prisons: elizabeth fry, john howard, corruption by contamination. Prisons were warehouses where we put anyone who had anything to do with the law mass crowding of different people.
