CRM 3303 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Therapeutic Relationship

23 views3 pages

Document Summary

The notion of power here is to be understood as action upon another"s action. In our lives, powerful people have the privilege of editing or labeling our experience ex. I"m a problem, i"m ugly, i"m a coward etc. Allow the client to hold the privileged position in constructing their life. If someone tells you you"re ugly, doesn"t matter if you are or not, you"ll believe them. Therapists can help clients regain that power in constructing their lives. In order to do this, therapists can help clients perceive themselves from different perspectives, as in becoming aware that they are in power of their narrative. Also involves looking at the problem and how powerful it has become. This is done in a literary way by personifying the problem, in essence picturing it as an oppressor or a villain in the client"s story.
