ECH 2310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Labour Power, Liberty, Wage Labour
Document Summary
Locke often speaks of robert filmer"s failed writings. Locke"s ideology: adam was not given absolute authority over the world and his children by god. Bible states that god gave authority to adam when the world was created and then adam became the authority of humanity. Alternatives to filmer"s patriarchal understanding are failures: the contract between the people has major flaws if you cannot show a contract, there is no reason that a society should abide by it. Locke aimed to refute filmer"s theory of divine right of sovereignty. Believes that we must not confuse different types of power (paternal, family, and political) because they each have very different characteristics. Filmer often compared kings to fathers (traditional that family unit centred on the father as both the paternal and political center of power) Political power and parental power are completely different. People are free of paternal power when they are old enough to function as individuals.
