Document Summary

English 1100 a few notes on style. (please note that the following contains a few key notes on style, enough to allow you to speak about style issues when you evaluate the short essay on the midterm. We"ll go more into style concerns the week after the midterm. ) Briefly, each and every sentence of your essay should have been consciously styled. That is, every sentence should be the product of deliberate rhetorical control on your part. Writing that is consciously styled will be unified and coherent. Key point: each sentence should grow out of, or extend, the previous sentence. Good writing means thinking hard about the relation between your sentences. Good writing will take the reader through the logical turns and shift of the argument. And so you need to use transitional words and phrases: These are usually placed at or near the start of sentences so they can signal to readers where your text is going.
