Art deco, also known as style moderne, focuses in decorative arts and architecture that stemmed from the 1920s and developed into a significant style in western europe and the united states throughout the 1930s. The style was first displayed in paris at the exposition internationale des arts. The art deco movement included luxurious items to fabricate a sleek and non-traditional style that symbolized wealth and elegance. Art deco features clean shapes and ornaments that are geometric; usually expensive materials that are man-made and natural such as plastic, silver, jade and crystal. The style represents a modern and classy characteristic with symmetry and simplicity. Diaghilev"s ballets russes, a ballet company that modernized theater and dance. Decorative ideas were taken from native american and egyptian cultures as well as nature. Animals, nude female figures, foliage and sunrays were conventionalized to appear as motifs in decorative arts. Many art deco creators fabricated individually crafted items.
