Argument Analysis
Toulim Method of Argument Analysis
Claim: the position or claim being argued for; the conclusion of the argument
Reason: reasons or supporting evidence that bolster the claim
Assumption (Logic): the principle or chain of reasoning that connects the
grounds/reasons to the claim
Backing (Proof): support, justification, reasons to back up the assumption
Rebuttal/Reservation: exceptions to the claim; description and rebuttal of counter-
examples and counter-arguments
Qualification: specification of limits to claim, warrant and backing. The degree of
conditionality asserted
