This version of antigone is different, in the sense that in the original, when antigone is found burying her brother, she isn"t condemned to death, but her uncle just turns away. An illusion is just a reference to something outside the text. This is the way that the original text of antigone was used in this version. There are allusions to the bible throughout the text. In the new version, haemon"s father runs an insane asylum, which is a symbol of control and is representative of a society as a whole. All kinds of people were institutionalised in the mid 19th century simply because they didn"t fit in with society. This story really represents this repressive, absolute control. A symbolic setting, by the river and the wilderness on the other side. Crossing rivers is seen as an immense opportunity for change and adventure. The wilderness represents how difficult people, especially the inmates are to control.
