Why is parallelism so helpful for lists and for headings and sub-headings on reports, outlines, proposals, resumes, instructions etc. For lists, headings or subheadings use parallel forms such as: all noun phrases, all ing (participial) phrases, all questions, all imperatives. Resume: my responsibilities as assistant to the director involved: taking calls and booking clients, doing all routine correspondence, preparing an internal, bi-monthly newsletter, updating company data base. Headings that use noun phrases: topic: should we have a new memorial set up next to the federal court house, costs to the taxpayer. Are there any incidental costs: benefits to the taxpayer, use of public land. Headings that use ing phrases: topic: launch of new dinner menu, designing new menu. Cost: calculating advertising budget, assessing risks, setting up schedule.
