Coyote = trickster figure in north american first nations peoples: ambiguous relationship w/time. Age vs. experience: coyote"s gender is ambiguous, binaries of western thought are broken. Basic social values of western thought = gender, morals, etc. Tricksters = question moralities, opens up pluralities. Coyote"s completely self-serving dualism of good/bad. Coyote is not intentionally good/evil, tends to thwart human values (break rules) Coyote doesn"t get afraid and seems generally bewildered but also smart at the same time. Coyote favours jokes over seriousness, gets distracted. Coyote = personifies the ambivalence that fn peoples felt about their lives after. Coyote stories are bent tricksters do not follow conventional western stories no clear logic of right or wrong. Marvellously indians call it guanahani: explorers acknowledged fn peoples, later, settlers made it seem like empty land. Presumptuousness of explorers + settlers map for a place he"s never visited.
